The two main characters complimented each other very well, and helped each other grow as the story developed. That relationship is, of course, the main driving force for most of those who’d want to read this book it was also my favorite aspect of the book as a whole. The relationship that grows between a hollywood heir and his roguish bodyguard is one that can be absolutely addicting to other readers to binge-read. ![]() Genre(s): New Adult Romance, LGBT Total Star Rating: 4 StarsĪnother book to check out for those who love M/M romance novels, Damaged Like Us was a fun addition to the genre. ![]() The women of troy a novel6/24/2023 ![]() Through Briseis’s clear eyes the Greek base, peopled by fighting men and captive women, was revealed to be a “rape camp”. ![]() Achilles – terrifying, charismatic and doomed to an early death – is hard to sideline. It wasn’t an easy task Barker had set herself. ![]() Published in 2018, Pat Barker’s The Silence of the Girls was a rewriting of the plot of the Iliad from the point of view of a captive queen, Briseis, over whose possession Agamemnon and Achilles fell out. To Pyrrhus and Alcimus they are doubly invisible because they are slaves and because they are women. These other Trojans, though, are of no account. There are plenty of other Trojans in the Greek camp, hundreds of them. He is thinking of Calchas, the priest, and Helenus, the Trojan prince who – under torture – revealed the information that enabled the Greeks to enter the city. But which one? Alcimus, Pyrrhus’s chief lieutenant, points out that there are “only two Trojans in the camp”. He wonders who could have attempted this act of respect. The Greek Pyrrhus, who hacked him to death at the foot of an altar, is displeased. ![]() The mutilated body of the sacked city’s king, Priam, has been left lying in the dunes by the Greek camp, stinking and covered all over – as Pat Barker’s narrator horribly notes – with “flies, thousands of them … like a fuzz of black bristles”. Its warriors, even its unborn male babies, are all dead. ![]() Here in Berlin by Cristina García6/24/2023 ![]() In that novel, we see Celia del Pino, the book’s protagonist, on a veranda of her own, also looking out to sea, “in her wicker swing guarding the north coast of Cuba.” It’s been 26 years between García’s debut and the release of Here in Berlin. ![]() Its last scene is an echo to another moment from a different García novel-her celebrated debut, Dreaming in Cuban, of course. He spends the rest of his life scanning the horizon from his veranda, binoculars at the ready, waiting for a German submarine to take him away once more. There, he spends several months learning German, becoming friendly with the other young men, battling a British warship, and ultimately, is released back to Cuba, where nobody believes Ernesto’s story. ![]() When Ernesto denies having anything to give, he’s taken into the belly of the submarine. The German who accosts him asks for supplies and rum. ![]() In the story, Ernesto is captured during his shift as a night watchman. Of the many stories one finds in Cristina García’s latest novel, Here in Berlin (Counterpoint, 2017), my favorite is the one told by Ernesto Cuadras, the young Cuban man who spends five months as a prisoner of war on a German U-boat. ![]() Larose louise erdrich summary6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Mayla and her baby were also at the scene, and the attacker prodded Mayla for missing cash. The day of the attack, Geraldine received a call from Mayla Wolfskin with hopes of enrolling her child as a member of the tribe. Geraldine is then moved to tell her version of the story. Geraldine’s interest is piqued by Bazil’s mention of Yeltow, and she asks Bazil a few follow-up questions. The governor, named Curtis Yeltow, is attempting to adopt a Native child-this is ironic since his policies are known for disenfranchising Native communities. One day, Bazil tells Geraldine and Joe that he hopes to contact the governor of South Dakota. Bazil recounts another Native legend in which a child was rescued by a dolphin. During one dinner, Bazil tells the story of Geraldine’s great-aunt, who was carried to shore by a turtle after she was abandoned by her parents. Frustrated by Geraldine’s condition, Bazil initiates a new nightly routine in hopes of lifting her spirits-he brings a table into her room so that the family can dine together. Geraldine doesn't respond to Soren’s questions, instead remaining catatonic in bed. The following day, Soren returns to the Coutts’ home to ask Geraldine about the file. ![]() The book behind her eyes6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Before Louise can stop herself, she has fallen into bed with David and become close friends with Adele, convinced she can maintain both relationships without anyone finding out.īut then? Louise (Simona Brown) is an English single mom who works part-time in a psychiatrist’s office. Adapted by Steve Lightfoot and Angela LaManna, the series starts off in familiar, secure territory as an erotic thriller about a love triangle. The shame of it is that Behind Her Eyes the TV show is actually pretty good, until it starts prizing wild twists above all else. And I’m sorry to report that my reaction was the latter. I have not read Pinborough’s novel, and only learned of the hashtag after watching all six episodes of the new Netflix limited series version of Behind Her Eyes. ![]() Behind Her Eyes, a bestselling thriller written by Sarah Pinborough, was marketed with its own hashtag, #WTFThatEnding, that can be interpreted two ways: as a lure convincing potential readers that they’ll be delighted by an unexpected conclusion, or as a warning that they’ll want to hurl the book across the room upon finishing. ![]() Dante's Inferno by Dante Alighieri6/23/2023 ![]() ![]() The cone, according to Dante, formed when Lucifer, the fallen angel, fell to Earth. Dante even gives an exact value of Earth's radius of 3,250 miles (it's actually 3,959 miles). ![]() Hell, as part of earth, would have to be cone-shaped. This image is based on calculations of Greek philosophers, like Eratosthenes of Cyrene or Claudius Ptolemy, who argued that Earth is a sphere. Each circle was dedicated to a sin and the sin's related punishment. According to author Marco Romano, in the description of Dante's Inferno we find earthquakes, rivers, mountains, landslides, a desert of scorching sand and even some types of rocks (like the famous marble of Carrara).ĭante imagined Hell like an inverted cone, with its circles gradually becoming smaller nearer to Earth's core.
